How much does a Tanzania safari really cost?

Tanzania safari pricing is driven by four levers: party size (per-person pricing drops as the vehicle fills toward our 4-guest cap), trip length (longer trips amortise transfer and arrival costs), lodging tier (mid-range to ultra-luxury swings the daily rate from ~$425 to $1,250+ per person), and season (peak July–September lifts lodge rates 15–20%; the green season in April–May drops them 15–25%). The calculator above uses Savunda's own published from-prices, refreshed each season.

What the estimate gives you

A realistic ballpark for a private safari with a dedicated guide and 4×4. It is not a quote — final pricing depends on the specific lodges (some premium camps are 30% higher than the tier average), whether bush flights are needed (~$280–$420/leg per person), and whether you want extras like a hot-air balloon morning or a Kilimanjaro/Zanzibar extension. Where the money goes

Roughly: 40–50% to lodging, 18–22% to park and conservation fees (set by Tanzania National Parks and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority — these are non-negotiable), 12–15% to the vehicle and fuel, 10–12% to the guide's salary and crew share, and the rest to operational overhead. What does a Tanzania safari typically cost per person per day?

Mid-range lodging: ~$425/pp/day. Premium tented camps: ~$695/pp/day. Top-tier luxury (Singita, andBeyond, Mnemba): $1,250+/pp/day. Shoulder-season pricing is the baseline; green season (Apr–May) is ~15% cheaper, peak season (Jul–Sep, Dec holidays) ~18% more.

What's included in the per-person price?

All accommodation on the stated tier (full board), private 4×4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, professional driver-guide, all park and conservation fees, bottled water in the vehicle, and airport transfers. Bush flights between parks are extra and quoted separately.

What's NOT included?

International flights, Tanzania tourist visa ($50–$100), travel insurance (required), gratuities for guide and lodge staff (we provide a sensible guideline), alcohol at lodges, optional activities like hot-air balloon ($595) or walking safaris, and any pre/post safari extensions to Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro.

Are prices the same in any month?

No. Peak season (Jul–Sep, plus 20 Dec–05 Jan): expect a 15–20% uplift on lodge rates. Shoulder (Jun, Oct, Nov, Feb): baseline. Green season (mid-Mar to mid-May): 15–25% discount on most premium camps, though some remote camps close entirely.
