Why this trip
The 7-Day Classic is the safari we run more often than any other, and the safari most experienced operators recommend as the right first trip to Tanzania. It hits every northern park, gives the Serengeti three nights rather than the more common one or two, and leaves the seventh day for a clean transfer home or onward to Zanzibar.
Three nights in the Serengeti is the difference between glimpsing the migration and actually moving with it. We position the camp deliberately: southern plains January through March for calving, central in April and May, north along the Mara from July through October for the river crossings. The plains are large enough that the wrong location can put you a four-hour drive from the day's action — the right location puts you inside it.
How we run it
A single vehicle, a single guide. The Land Cruiser is a recent 4×4 with pop-up roof, fridge, two-way radio. The mobile camp in the Serengeti is a tented affair that follows the herds — large walk-in tents, real beds, en-suite bucket shower, three-course dinner served under acacia trees by candlelight.
We use a small lodge in Karatu on night two rather than crowding two consecutive nights into the Ngorongoro rim. The descent is shorter from Rhino Lodge, but we like the highland farm setting and the chance to take an evening walk through coffee fields before the long Serengeti days.
The bush flight on day six
Most operators drive guests out of the Serengeti at the end of the trip. It's a long day in the vehicle and ends with everyone too tired for the goodbye dinner. We default to the bush flight from Seronera back to Arusha — fifty minutes in the air rather than nine in the truck, and arrival in time for a proper meal. If you'd rather drive (the road back through the Ngorongoro pass is itself memorable), say so when you book.
