5-Day Mafia Whale Shark Safari

Why this trip

Mafia Island is the quiet sibling of Zanzibar — same Indian Ocean, similar Swahili culture, dramatically fewer tourists. It is also the best place in Tanzania (and arguably East Africa) to swim with whale sharks during the October-to-March season. The reef diving is good year-round, the lodges are small and family-owned, and the pace is genuinely slow in a way few other Tanzania destinations match.

This isn't a Big Five safari. It's a marine and decompression trip. Most travellers book it as an add-on to a Northern Circuit safari rather than as a standalone trip, but a 5-day standalone Mafia trip works for travellers prioritising marine wildlife over savanna.

How we run it

Bush flight from Dar es Salaam (40 minutes) to the Mafia airstrip, then a short transfer to one of three lodges depending on availability and tier:

• Pole Pole — 6 bungalows, premium small-eco lodge. Roughly USD 350-500 per person per night.
• Kinasi Lodge — 12 rooms, more established, similar tier. Roughly USD 300-450 per person per night.
• Butiama Beach Lodge — 10 rooms, mid-tier. Roughly USD 200-350 per person per night.

All three are within a short boat ride of the marine park dive sites and the whale shark feeding grounds (when in season).

The whale shark experience

October-to-March is the whale shark season. The sharks aggregate at the Mafia channel to feed on plankton blooms. The snorkelling protocol is straightforward: small boat, experienced guide, spot a feeding shark, slide into the water at a respectful distance. The shark continues feeding while you swim alongside.

Encounters last 30-60 minutes per shark and you typically get 2-4 encounters per boat trip. Sharks range from 6-10 metres long. There is no feeding or artificial attraction — the protocol is observation only, and the marine park enforces strict rules on distance, no touching, no flash.

For divers, the Mafia Island Marine Park reef is among the most protected in East Africa — coral cover is excellent and pelagic species are reliable. Two-tank dive days at sites like Kinasi Pass and Chole Bay deliver consistent quality.

Cultural and beach time

Chole Island (10 minutes by boat from most lodges) holds the ruins of a 19th-century Swahili settlement — coral-stone houses, a fortress, an old mosque. The walking tour takes about 2 hours and pairs well with a beach lunch.

Beach time on Mafia is genuine slowness. There are no resort beach clubs, no jet skis, no boat traffic to speak of. The lodges are spaced far apart along the coast, and most days you'll see no other travellers on the beach.

What this trip costs

Mid-tier (Butiama Beach Lodge) starts at USD 3,250 per person sharing. Premium tier (Pole Pole or Kinasi) runs USD 4,200-5,500 per person. The cost is mostly the lodge and the bush flight; whale shark and dive activities are roughly USD 80-150 per person per session.
