Why this trip
Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and the best Kilimanjaro warm-up in East Africa. At 4,566m it's lower than Kili (5,895m) but steeper per day — most travellers find Meru genuinely demanding. The reward is a sunrise summit with views of Kilimanjaro 75km to the east, glowing in the dawn light.
Climbing Meru also serves a practical purpose: it's an exceptional acclimatization climb. Travellers who do Meru and then Kilimanjaro 5-10 days later see summit success rates jump from 75% to 90% on the Kili attempt. The body's altitude response is meaningfully primed.
For travellers who want a high-mountain trekking experience without committing to Kilimanjaro's 7-9 day schedule, Meru is the standalone option. For travellers planning a Kili climb, Meru is the smart prelude.
How we run it
Pickup in Arusha, drive to Momella Gate (1 hour) where Arusha National Park begins. From there it's a 4-day mountain climb with hut accommodation:
- Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m). 4-5 hour walk through the wildlife zone with an armed park ranger. Giraffe, buffalo, and colobus monkey encounters routine.
- Day 2: Miriakamba to Saddle Hut (3,570m). 5-6 hours through the heather zone and into alpine moorland. Optional sunset walk to Little Meru (3,820m).
- Day 3: Pre-dawn summit attempt to Meru's main peak (4,566m). Long day — 12-15 hours total with the descent to Miriakamba.
- Day 4: Miriakamba back to Momella Gate. 4-5 hours, mostly descent through wildlife zones.
The huts are basic but comfortable — bunk-style sleeping, shared dining hall, cold water for washing. Meals are hearty mountain food prepared by the cook team. The crew typically includes a lead guide, assistant guide, cook, and porters (porter-to-climber ratio depends on group size).
The summit day
Day 3 is the test. Pre-dawn start (1 a.m. wake-up), climb along the dramatic crater rim with the volcano's caldera dropping away to the left, reach the summit just before sunrise. Kilimanjaro to the east, the Rift Valley floor below, and on clear days the Indian Ocean coastline visible 250km south.
The summit is genuinely cold — overnight temperatures at Saddle Hut drop to -5°C, summit temperatures often -10°C with wind. Bring proper alpine gear: insulated jacket, gloves, warm hat, headlamp.
