Why this trip
The Northern Circuit is the most travelled safari route in Tanzania for a reason: it puts three different ecosystems within a day's drive of each other. Tarangire holds the highest elephant density in the country. The Ngorongoro crater floor is a closed system with a permanent population of black rhino, lion, and several thousand flamingo. And the southern Serengeti is where the great migration calves between January and March, where the predators concentrate at the lake edges, and where the short-grass plains begin.
Five days is the shortest version that still gives the park time to do its work. We've found that anything under four days feels rushed — you spend half your time in the vehicle in transit rather than watching what's in front of you.
How we run it
One vehicle, one guide, your party only. Maximum seven guests. The guide is a working professional — most of our drivers have ten or more years in these parks and read animal behaviour the way a city person reads a street map. No rotating guides between days, no shared vehicles with strangers.
We use a mobile tented camp in the southern Serengeti rather than a fixed lodge, because the camp follows the wildlife rather than the wildlife following the lodge. The tents are large, with proper beds, an en-suite bucket shower, and a flush toilet. Power runs from solar with a generator backup for charging. Dinner is three courses, cooked on site, served by candlelight under acacia trees.
A note on pace
Most operators run this route as four days. They squeeze the Ngorongoro crater into a half-day, then drive straight through to the central Serengeti on the same afternoon. You arrive at camp after dark, exhausted, having seen a lot of road. We add the fifth day deliberately so the crater gets a full morning and the Serengeti gets two nights. The price difference is small. The difference in what you actually see is large.

A clear sense of how the three habitats fit together. A guide you'll remember by name. Several hundred photographs you won't be embarrassed to share. And, if the season is right, the sound of a lion roaring at four in the morning ten metres from your tent — the sound that ruins every other holiday for the rest of your life.
