5-Day Mahale Chimpanzee Safari

Why this trip

Mahale is the chimpanzee park most travellers haven't heard of and the one most experienced safari operators put at the top of the list. The setting is the most beautiful in Tanzania — forested mountains rising 2,000 metres straight out of Lake Tanganyika, the second-deepest freshwater lake in the world. The chimpanzees are the M-group, a fully habituated community of around 60 individuals studied continuously by Japanese primatologists since 1965 — the longest single primate study in history.

The trip is a fly-in, fly-out operation. There are no roads into the park. You arrive by charter plane and boat; you leave the same way. The camps are unfenced beach properties on Lake Tanganyika, the chimp treks are forest hikes with rangers and the research team trackers, and the afternoons are spent swimming in the lake or kayaking along the forested shore.

This is the premium chimpanzee experience available anywhere in Africa.

How we run it

Charter flight from Arusha — typically 3.5 hours including a refuelling stop — landing at the Mahale airstrip on the lake shore. From there a 20-minute boat transfer along the shore to camp.

We work with two camps:

• Greystoke Mahale (Nomad Tanzania) — 6 banda-style rooms, full board, all activities included. Roughly USD 1,800–2,400 per person per night. The defining property in Mahale and a real bucket-list lodge.
• Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge — 10 chalets, less polished but solid mid-premium option. Roughly USD 700–950 per person per night. The right choice for travellers who want Mahale without the Greystoke premium.

Two treks across the four nights. Trek time is variable — the chimps move overnight, and tracking from the dawn report can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 6 hours. Most treks are 2–4 hours. The hour with the chimps themselves is non-negotiable park-regulated.

Between treks: snorkelling on the reef (Lake Tanganyika holds 250+ cichlid species, more colourful than most coral reefs), kayaking along the forest shore, beach time, and optional forest walks with park rangers on non-trek days.

What to expect physically

Chimp treks involve forest hiking at low altitude (770m, no acclimatisation issue). The terrain is steep in places — muddy in wet season, dusty in dry. Most healthy adults manage. We require minimum 15 years for trekkers (park rule), and travellers with serious cardiac or mobility limitations should not attempt Mahale.

The boats, kayaks, and snorkelling are gentle and don't require special fitness.

What this trip costs

Mid-premium tier (Mbali Mbali Mahale) starts at USD 6,750 per person sharing. Premium tier (Greystoke Mahale) runs USD 11,500–14,500 per person. The bulk of the cost is the lodge and the charter flight; park fees and permits are a smaller share.
