African wild dog
~800 in the park, largest population in East Africa. Pack-hunting at dawn and dusk in the Beho Beho and Lake Manze areas. Genuinely the species we plan trips around.

31,000 km² of miombo woodland and the Rufiji River — the largest park in Africa, where you can boat through hippo channels and walk among elephants and rarely meet another vehicle.
© Savunda Guides · Rufiji River, Aug 2024Nyerere is what people imagine when they say "I want to feel alone in Africa." It is the only park in Tanzania where you can do this consistently.
The park was carved out of the northern third of the old Selous Game Reserve in 2019 and renamed for Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere. At 30,893 square kilometres it is the largest national park on the continent — larger than Belgium. The interior is miombo woodland, broken by sand rivers, swamps, five inter-connected lakes, and the Rufiji — the biggest river in East Africa. Most guests never see more than 5% of it. The other 95% is wild in a way that nothing in the Northern Circuit is wild.
What you do here is different. Boat safaris on the Rufiji are the headline — Tanzania has only two parks where boats are permitted in numbers, and Nyerere is the one with the best river. You glide through hippo channels with the engine cut. Crocodiles slide off banks the size of trucks. African skimmers fly inches above the water. Walking safaris are standard — armed ranger, slow pace, three hours, mostly looking at tracks, dung, plants. Game drives happen too but feel like an afterthought — you'll do them in the late afternoon when the boats can't go.
And the wildlife list is its own argument. The park holds the largest population of African wild dogs in East Africa — pack-hunting, photogenic, endangered. The Beho Beho area has some of the densest lion sightings in Tanzania, but the lions look different from northern lions — bigger manes, less photographed, more wary. Elephants here recovered slowly from the poaching of the 2000s and are now stable. Hippos and crocs are everywhere. What you will not see: large concentrations of wildebeest or zebra. This is not migration country.
Nyerere is strictly a dry-season park for most guests. The rains close roads and most camps for half the year. The dry-season window is narrower but exceptional.
Wet. Most camps closed. Lakes and swamps full. Roads impassable in places.
Same. A few river-focused camps open with boat-only operation.
Long rains. Closed.
Wettest month. Universally closed.
Closed. Operators start positioning for June re-opening.
Camps reopen. Roads firming up. Boat safaris available immediately. Quiet.
Dry season established. Animals begin to concentrate near remaining water.
Peak. River level dropping, exposing sandbanks. Boat safaris exceptional.
Our favourite. Maximum concentration, low water, sandbank crocodiles, wild dog packs hunting impala in open ground.
End of dry. Temperatures rising. Hot afternoons (~40°C). Predator activity peak.
Short rains start. Some camps begin closing. Heat reduces slightly.
Most camps closed by mid-month. River level rising.
A different wildlife list from the Northern Circuit. Realistic odds for a 3-day dry-season trip — note the high wild-dog odds (uncommon elsewhere in Tanzania) and the absence of wildebeest.

Thousands along the Rufiji. Boat safari gives eye-level views unattainable elsewhere in Tanzania. Loud nightly chorus from camp.
Some of the largest crocs in East Africa — 5m+ individuals are common. Best seen sunning on Rufiji sandbanks in late dry season.
Recovered from 2000s poaching to ~12,000 individuals. Family groups along the river in dry season. Bull elephants in musth in October.
The Beho Beho prides are among the most-studied lions in southern Tanzania. Larger-framed, darker manes than Serengeti lions. Less habituated to vehicles — feels different.
Both species absent from the Northern Circuit. Sable in particular is the standout — black-and-white, curving horns, woodland specialist.
Common but secretive in miombo. Better seen during walking safaris than drives.
African skimmer (signature species — flies low over the river at dawn), Pel's fishing-owl, palm-nut vulture, white-fronted bee-eater colonies, broad-billed roller.
Resident herds. Smaller than northern parks but consistent. Buffalo herds of 300+ along the river.
2–3 hour boat rides — morning or sunset, occasionally both. Engine-cut drifting through hippo channels. The reason most guests choose Nyerere over Ruaha.
Default activity, not an upsell. 2.5–3 hour walks with armed Tanzania National Parks ranger and your guide. Tracking, plant ID, slow pace. Different rhythm from a vehicle.
1–2 nights in a mobile camp away from the main lodge — bedroll under mosquito mesh, fire, the closest you can get to the old safari experience. Some camps offer this; we organise it carefully.
Open Land Cruiser, but typically late afternoon only (mornings reserved for boat or walk). Less productive than Northern Circuit drives but still excellent for predators.
Tigerfish in the Rufiji. Specialist activity, available at a few camps. Done on a separate boat from game-viewing.
Permitted in the park (uncommonly for a Tanzanian national park). Run with red filter; honey badger, civet, genet, leopard, aardvark are all possible.
Very limited in Nyerere — the park's remoteness means even basic accommodation costs more than equivalent in Serengeti. Expect rustic, functional, hot water from buckets.
8–12 tents, en-suite, river views from your veranda, full activities included. The sweet spot — most Nyerere first-timers stay here.
Smaller, more design-led. Private dhow, top-tier food, the most experienced southern-Tanzania guides on staff. The right choice for second-time Tanzania travellers.
Beho Beho (the original 1972 luxury Selous camp, still iconic), Sand Rivers with private guide — the references for the southern Tanzania experience.
Nyerere is reached by air — there are no good road options for international guests. Coastal Aviation and Auric Air operate scheduled bush flights from Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro (JRO) to the main airstrips: Mtemere, Siwandu, and Beho Beho.
Combining Nyerere with the Northern Circuit is possible but inefficient — the connecting flights add a full travel day. We mostly pair Nyerere with Ruaha (1 hour flight) or with Zanzibar (45-min flight) at the end of the trip for beach time.
Both are real packages we've sold and run. Either is a starting point — we'll rewrite them around what you actually want.
JRO → Nyerere (3n) → Ruaha (3n) → DAR
The southern alternative — boats, walks, wild dogs, almost no other vehicles.
DAR → Nyerere (4n) → Zanzibar (5n) → DAR
Wilderness then beach. The most balanced 10-day Tanzania trip.
$82.60/person/day TANAPA fee (same as Serengeti) + $70/person river-fee per boat outing. Children 5–15 reduced rate. Fees collected as part of your trip.
Ages 12+ for most camps. The boat and walking activities, plus remoteness from medical facilities, make Nyerere less suited to young children. Some lodges accept 8+ with private guide. We screen carefully.
Moderate-to-high malaria risk — prophylaxis essential. Walking-safari altitudes are flat (under 300m) — accessible. Some camps have step-free common areas; few are wheelchair-equipped (we know which). Tell us your specifics.

The river is the rhythm. A morning boat safari runs from camp at 06:30 — coffee on board, engine cut in the hippo channels, three hours of drift. A walking safari takes the place of the late-morning game drive. Lunch and a long rest. A late-afternoon game drive starts at 16:00 and runs to last light. The pattern repeats. By the third day you stop counting species and start watching the river — which is, in many ways, the whole point.
Wild dogs — Lycaon pictus — are the species most guests come south to find. The Nyerere–Selous ecosystem holds the largest population in East Africa, perhaps 800 dogs across the park. Pack-hunting at dawn and dusk in the Beho Beho and Lake Manze areas is the textbook sighting. We don't guarantee them — no one does — but the odds are higher here than anywhere else in the country.
Different products. Serengeti gives you scale, migration, big-cat density, lots of other vehicles, and the chance to see the photographic icon of Africa. Nyerere gives you boats, walks, wild dogs, and the rare feeling of being alone in a Tanzanian park. Many guests do Serengeti on their first trip and Nyerere on their second; we think that's the right sequence.
Fourteen thousand square kilometres of grass, kopjes, and weather — the stage on which the wildebeest migration runs its yearly loop and where most of Tanzania's lions actually live.
A 260km² collapsed caldera holding 25,000 large animals — the highest density of wildlife in Africa and one of two reliable rhino sites in Tanzania.
Baobabs, the Tarangire River, and what locals call "Africa's elephant emergency room" — when surrounding land dries, 4,000 elephants come here.
Seven days through Tanzania's southern parks — boat safaris on the Rufiji, wild dog tracking in Ruaha, and the vast, quiet wilderness that most northern-circuit travellers never see.
Ten days, two halves: the classic northern parks followed by a flight south to the Selous-Nyerere reserve for boat safari, walking safari, and the country's quieter side.
