7-Day Southern Circuit Wild

Why this trip

The Southern Circuit is what most repeat Tanzania travellers come back for, and what most first-timers wish they'd done if they discover it after a Northern trip. The wildlife is genuinely as good as the Northern Circuit — better in some specific categories (wild dogs, large lion prides, walking safari quality, boat safari access). The vehicle density is a fraction of what you'll find in central Serengeti. The lodging tier is mostly mid-premium and above (there is essentially no budget tier in the Southern Circuit), and the cost is meaningfully higher per day than the Northern Circuit because of the bush flights, but the experience justifies it.

We run this trip more for repeat visitors than for first-timers. Both work.

How we run it

The trip starts in Dar es Salaam rather than Arusha because of the geography — Dar is the natural gateway to Nyerere and Ruaha. We bush-fly between the parks (Dar–Nyerere–Ruaha–Dar) on Coastal Aviation or Auric Air. The flights themselves are good wildlife viewing if you have the window seat.

In Nyerere we base at a riverside camp on the Rufiji — Sand Rivers Selous, Roho ya Selous, or equivalent depending on availability. Boat safaris in the morning and afternoon use the camp's own boats; walking safaris are with the camp's resident ranger. The boat experience is genuinely unique in Tanzania — close encounters with hippo and crocodile in their element, elephants drinking at the banks, fishing scenes that haven't changed in a century.

In Ruaha we use one of the premier camps — Mwagusi, Jongomero, or Kichaka — depending on dates and budget. All three deliver excellent guiding and access to the Mwagusi and Mdonya river systems where the dry-season game concentrates. Wild dog tracking is part of the operation; our guides coordinate with the camp's tracker team daily.

The walking safaris

Two walks on this trip — one in Nyerere, one in Ruaha. Both are licensed concession walks with armed ranger and senior guide. Three hours, gentle pace, focus on what vehicle safaris miss: tracks and signs, smaller wildlife, plants and how the bush actually works at ground level. If you've never done a walking safari, this trip is the right introduction.

What this trip costs

Mid-premium tier starts at USD 5,890 per person sharing, two adults travelling. Premium tier (Sand Rivers + Jongomero or equivalent) is USD 7,500–9,000 per person. The cost is higher per day than the Northern Circuit primarily because of the bush flights and the higher lodging-tier minimum.
