10-Day Northern and Southern

Why this trip

Most Tanzania safaris cover the north only — the crater, the Serengeti, Tarangire. Those parks deserve their reputation, but the country is larger than its postcards. The Selous Game Reserve (the northern half of which is now Nyerere National Park) is the southern equivalent: a Rufiji river system bigger than the entire northern circuit combined, where boat safaris and walking safaris are possible because the reserve operates under different rules.

Ten days lets you do both without rushing either. Six days north, three days south, one day for arrivals and the connecting flight. You return with two distinct sets of memories — the open plains of the Serengeti and the river-and-forest world of the Selous — instead of one repeated set.

How we run it

The northern half is identical to the 7-Day Classic: private vehicle, working guide, mobile camp in the Serengeti positioned for the migration. The southern half is different by design — boat safaris and walking safaris require licensed armed rangers, and the camps are riverside fixed installations rather than mobile tents.

In the Selous you'll use a shared safari vehicle for the game drives (the camps run their own). This is the standard everywhere in the southern circuit and the cost-honest way to do it. Boat and walking activities remain private with your assigned guide-ranger pair.

A note on the bush flight

The Serengeti-Selous flight on day seven is the longest single leg in the trip — about four hours including a stop in Dar to change aircraft. It's also the moment the country opens up. From 12,000 feet you watch the savannah give way to the Rufiji floodplain. Pack light for that day; checked bag limits are 15kg in a soft-sided duffel.
