Why this day trip
Materuni is the right half-day trip for a slow day in Moshi — particularly the day before or after a Kilimanjaro climb. The hike to the waterfall is gentle (45 minutes each way through banana plantations and forest), the coffee tour is a genuinely interesting visit to a Chagga family farm, and the lunch is real village food rather than tourist food.
The day
8:30 a.m. pickup. Drive 45 minutes up the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro to Materuni village. Meet the village guide. Hike down to the waterfall (90 metres, with a small spray pool at the base) and back. Lunch with a Chagga family. Coffee tour: pick the cherries from the bush, peel, dry, roast over a wood fire, grind by hand, drink the cup you made. Return to Moshi by 4 p.m.
On the coffee
The Chagga people have been growing coffee on the slopes of Kilimanjaro since the late 19th century. The slopes here are at 1,500m altitude with rich volcanic soil — the conditions that make Kilimanjaro coffee one of the better Arabica regions in Africa. The hand-processed cup is rougher than a barista's pour but the experience of doing every step yourself is the point.
