If a guest asks me how many days they should take in Tanzania and they have the time, I tell them ten. Seven days does the Northern Circuit honestly. Fourteen days starts to fight diminishing returns unless you're adding a major second region. Ten days is the trip length that unlocks the most options for the smallest cost-per-day premium, and it is the length I would book if it were my own trip.
Here is what it costs in 2026.
Headline price
Per person, two adults sharing a tent, private 4×4 with senior guide, full board, park fees included, internal bush flights as specified:
- Mid tier: USD 5,800–7,200 per person
- Premium tier: USD 10,500–13,500 per person
- Ultra-luxury (Singita, &Beyond, Sanctuary flagships): USD 19,000–28,000 per person
For two people on the mid tier, total: USD 11,600–14,400 before international flights, visas, insurance, and tips.
The day-by-day cost shape is similar to the 7-day breakdown — same park fees per night, same vehicle/guide line, with three additional nights of lodging and (depending on the shape) one extra bush flight.
Why 10 days is the sweet spot
Three concrete reasons.
One — the migration window opens up. A 7-day Northern Circuit trip in August can show you the Mara River from a central Serengeti base, but you won't have the time to position properly in north Serengeti for two or three crossing-window days. Ten days lets you spend 3 nights in central and 3 in north Serengeti, which roughly triples your odds of seeing a major crossing in the August–September window. The marginal cost is two extra nights of lodging plus one bush flight.
Two — you can add a second region without making the trip a death-march. A 10-day trip leaves room for a 3-night Zanzibar beach tail (most popular), a 3-night Lake Manyara or Tarangire deepening (most underrated), or a southern circuit (Ruaha or Nyerere) extension that is genuinely different country.
Three — pace. Seven-day Tanzania safaris tend to be tight: one night here, one night there, repacking every morning. Ten days lets you stay 2-3 nights in each camp, settle in, and have a guide who knows what you've already seen. The trip is meaningfully better for it, and the per-day rate goes down because lodges discount stays of 3+ nights.
Two 10-day shapes that work
Shape A — Northern Circuit + Zanzibar beach tail (the most-booked 10-day):
- Days 1–2: Arusha gateway, Tarangire (2 nights)
- Day 3: Lake Manyara or transfer day, Ngorongoro highlands (1 night)
- Day 4: Crater morning, transfer to central Serengeti (1 night)
- Days 5–6: Central Serengeti (2 nights)
- Day 7: Bush flight to north Serengeti (2 nights, migration window) — or central (extend by 1 night)
- Days 8–10: Bush flight to Zanzibar, 3 nights on north or northeast coast
This is the trip we book most often. It hits the Big Five, the migration when timing allows, and ends on a beach. Roughly USD 6,400–7,600 per person mid-tier, USD 12,500–15,500 premium.
Shape B — Deeper Northern + Southern combo (for repeat visitors or wildlife-focused travellers):
- Days 1–2: Tarangire (2 nights)
- Days 3–4: Lake Manyara plus Ngorongoro crater (2 nights at rim)
- Days 5–7: Central Serengeti (3 nights)
- Days 8–10: Bush flight to Nyerere (Selous) — 3 nights in Southern Tanzania for boat safaris, walking safaris, and wild dog viewing
This is the shape we recommend for guests who already did a 7-day Northern trip and want to go further. Wildly different country in the south, very few vehicles. Roughly USD 6,800–8,200 per person mid-tier, USD 13,500–17,000 premium.
Per-person price at three tiers
Same Shape A itinerary, two adults sharing, per person:
| Line | Mid | Premium | Ultra-luxury | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Park & conservation fees | $1,400 | $1,400 | $1,400 | | Lodging (9 nts) | $3,400 | $6,300 | $13,500 | | Vehicle + senior guide | $1,200 | $1,400 | $1,600 | | Internal flights (2 legs) | $560 | $560 | $560 | | Zanzibar (3 nts, north coast) | $700 | $1,500 | $4,200 | | Margin & overhead | $950 | $1,650 | $2,800 | | Total per pax | ~$8,210 | ~$12,810 | ~$24,060 |

What the extra 3 days actually cost
The honest math, comparing a 7-day Northern trip to a 10-day Northern + Zanzibar trip at mid-tier:
- 7-day total per person: USD 5,000–5,400
- 10-day total per person: USD 6,400–7,600
- Marginal cost of the extra 3 days: USD 1,400–2,200 per person
That works out to roughly USD 470–740 per extra day. On a 7-day base trip already costing USD 720+ per day, the marginal day is cheaper than the average day — because vehicle and guide costs are already paid for and only lodging, fees, and a few extras scale.
This is the cost case for 10 days. The extra three days are not three times a day-rate; they are roughly two days for the price of one and a bit. The Zanzibar tail in particular adds disproportionate value per dollar.
Season impact on a 10-day trip
Peak-season uplift (July–September, Christmas) hits hardest on a 10-day trip because there are more lodge nights. Same 10-day Shape A:
- Shoulder season (Jun, Oct, Nov, Feb): baseline. USD 6,400–7,600 per pax mid-tier.
- Peak season (Jul–Sep, late Dec): +15–22% on lodging. USD 7,200–8,800 per pax mid-tier.
- Green season (mid-Mar to mid-May): −15–25% on lodging. USD 5,600–6,500 per pax mid-tier.
For Shape A specifically, the trade-off is the river crossings — those happen in August–September and not in the green season. For Shape B (Northern + Southern), the green-season trip is genuinely a strong trip because the southern circuit's best season runs into November regardless.
Common add-ons within the 10 days
These slot into either shape without extending the trip.
- Hot-air balloon safari in the Serengeti — USD 595 per person, replaces one morning game drive.
- Walking safari in Tarangire's Boundary Hill or Nyerere — typically included in premium camps, USD 80–120 per person elsewhere.
- Cultural day visit to a Maasai boma in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — USD 50 per person, ethical-partner camps prefered (we list them in cultural visits).
- Bush dinner under the stars — USD 200–350 per couple at mid-tier, often complimentary at premium.
- Helicopter scenic flight (Ngorongoro highlands or northern Serengeti) — USD 1,200–2,400 per couple. Real splurge.
