I plan more couple trips than any other shape of safari. Two people, one vehicle, two passports — it sounds simpler than a family of four and it is, operationally. But on a per-person basis it is the most expensive way to do Tanzania, and that surprises people who came in assuming a couple's safari would be cheaper because there are fewer of you.
It isn't. Here's why, and what a 2026 Tanzania safari actually costs for two.
The short answer
For a couple sharing a tent on a private Tanzania safari in 2026:
- Mid-tier, 7 days: USD 4,400–5,400 per person. Total for two: USD 8,800–10,800.
- Premium tier, 7 days: USD 7,500–9,500 per person. Total for two: USD 15,000–19,000.
- Ultra-luxury (Singita, &Beyond Crater Lodge, Greystoke), 7 days: USD 14,000–22,000 per person. Total for two: USD 28,000–44,000.
These exclude international flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, tips, and any Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro extension.

Why two people pay more per person than four
This is the single piece of math nobody warns you about. The vehicle and guide are a fixed daily cost — roughly USD 320–420 per day for a private 4×4 Land Cruiser with a senior driver-guide. Park fees are per person. Lodging is per person. The vehicle is not.
That fixed daily vehicle cost gets split across however many people are in the vehicle. When there are four of you, each person carries USD 80–105 of vehicle cost per day. When there are two of you, each person carries USD 160–210 of vehicle cost per day — roughly USD 1,100–1,500 more per person across a 7-day trip than a family of four would pay.
That is the "couples tax" and it is real. It is not the operator gouging you; it is arithmetic. Some operators offer shared-vehicle safaris where you ride with another couple to soften this, and that does work, but it costs you the flexibility that is the whole point of a private safari.
The other lever is the tent. Two people in one tent is the most lodge-efficient configuration in Tanzania — single supplements range from 25% to 60% on most camps, so two travelling together genuinely save money versus a single traveller. Two in a tent is the baseline rate.
Where the couple's money actually goes
For a 7-day Northern Circuit mid-tier safari for two — Tarangire, Lake Manyara or Ngorongoro, central Serengeti — here is the line-item shape of a USD 10,000 trip:
- Park and conservation fees (two adults, 6 nights): USD 1,350. Non-negotiable, set by TANAPA and the NCAA.
- Lodging (mid-tier, 6 nights, two in a tent, full board): USD 4,200.
- Vehicle, fuel, guide, crew (7 days): USD 2,300.
- One internal bush flight (Serengeti–Arusha, both pax): USD 560.
- Airport transfers, water, mineral inclusions: USD 280.
- Operator overhead and margin (12–15%): USD 1,300.
That's USD 10,000. Move two of those nights to a premium camp (think Asilia Namiri Plains, Nomad Lamai Serengeti, Sanctuary Olonana-equivalent) and you'll add roughly USD 1,400–2,000 per couple. Move them to ultra-premium (Singita Sasakwa, &Beyond Crater Lodge) and you'll add USD 5,000–9,000 per couple.
Three couple budgets that work

Mid-tier comfort (USD 9,500–11,000 total, 7 nights): 1 night Arusha Coffee Lodge or Gran Meliá, 2 nights mid-range Tarangire camp, 1 night Ngorongoro Sopa or similar rim lodge, 3 nights central Serengeti mid-range camp. Private vehicle, senior guide, one bush flight back. This is the most-booked couple trip on the site.
Premium honeymoon (USD 17,000–21,000 total, 8 nights): 1 night Gran Meliá Arusha, 2 nights Sanctuary Swala or Olivers Camp Tarangire, 2 nights The Highlands or Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, 3 nights Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti or Asilia Namiri Plains. Private vehicle, senior guide, bush flights both ways. Includes one private bush dinner and one champagne sundowner.
Ultra-luxury celebration (USD 36,000–48,000 total, 8 nights): 1 night Legendary Lodge Arusha, 2 nights Singita Faru Faru or &Beyond Klein's Camp, 2 nights &Beyond Crater Lodge, 3 nights Singita Sasakwa or Singita Mara River Tented Camp. Private vehicle dedicated to your party, head guide, all bush flights, full inclusives. Includes private bush bath, sleep-out platform option.
Add roughly USD 1,800–3,000 per person for a 3-night Zanzibar beach extension at any tier.
The honeymoon premium — what's real and what's marketing
There is a real honeymoon premium and there is a fake one.
The real premium: senior guides who read couples well, properly-positioned tents (rear of the camp, away from staff paths), camps that don't take children, included extras like private dinners and sundowners, and the lodge knowing it's your honeymoon so the bed is made properly. Operators charge USD 200–600 per couple per trip for this and it is worth it.
The fake premium: rose petals on the bed, "honeymoon packages" that bundle three nights of the same lodge at a 15% uplift, gift-wrapped Champagne that the lodge would have served anyway. Avoid these. If you tell us it's a honeymoon when you send your dates, we'll quietly add the real things and skip the rest.
The biggest honeymoon mistake we see is the all-inclusive packaged tour, where you ride in a vehicle with three other couples. The cost saving is USD 800–1,500 per couple. The trip cost is the romance of a private safari, and we've never had a couple tell us afterwards they'd make that trade again.
Where two people should spend the marginal dollar
If you have an extra USD 1,000 to spend on the trip, in order:
- A senior guide. USD 50–100 per day more than a junior; it changes the trip more than any other line item.
- One premium night somewhere strategic — Ngorongoro rim the night before the crater, or a north-Serengeti camp during river-crossing season.
- The bush flight back from the Serengeti instead of the long road transfer. Saves you a 7-hour drive on the last day of an emotional trip.
- A hot-air [balloon safari](/cost-calculator) in the Serengeti, USD 595 per person. It is touristy, it is also genuinely beautiful, and couples almost never regret it.
- One private bush dinner — USD 200–350 per couple. The most-photographed dinner of your life.
What couples skip without losing the trip
- Helicopter transfers between camps unless you genuinely have a single-day window. The scheduled bush flights are 80% as fast and 30% of the cost.
- The "exclusive use" vehicle add-on at mid-range camps. You already have a private vehicle on a private safari; the upsell is meaningless.
- Pre-arranged in-room massages — most premium camps have a spa or visiting therapist on request, at a 30% lower rate.
- A second Zanzibar property mid-trip. Pick one beach lodge and stay there. The pace of moving every two days breaks the post-safari decompression.
Booking shape
A typical couple's trip books 4–8 months ahead for peak season (July–September, Christmas), 2–4 months for shoulder. Premium and ultra-luxury camps need 6–12 months for the dates couples want. A deposit of 25–30% holds the trip; balance is due 60 days before arrival.
