What this route is good for Machame is the most-trekked route on Kilimanjaro. It approaches from the south through Machame village and climbs through five distinct ecosystems — rainforest, heather moorland, alpine desert, scree, and the summit glacier — over six trekking days. The scenery is excellent, the trail is well-maintained, and the campsites are well-managed. The seven-day version includes the Lava Tower acclimatisation day, which is what makes the summit rate climb from around 50% (the six-day version) to around 85%. We do not sell the six-day version because the extra fee is small and the difference in outcomes is large. ## How it compares to Lemosho Lemosho is one day longer, slightly more expensive, quieter, with marginally better acclimatisation and marginally better scenery on the approach days. Machame is the busier and cheaper option that shares the same final three days from the Barranco wall onwards. If budget is the deciding factor, Machame is the honest answer. If success rate is the deciding factor, Lemosho. ## The Barranco wall Day four involves a scramble up the Barranco wall — 250 metres of class-three scrambling on a well-trodden path, no ropes required. It looks alarming from below and is almost universally fine in practice. Guests with serious fear of exposure should mention it during booking; we can position a guide ahead and behind for the section. It takes about 90 minutes and the view from the top is worth the scramble. ## What to expect on summit night Same as every standard route: leave Barafu around 11 p.m., walk under headlamps up scree for six to eight hours, reach Stella Point on the rim at dawn, walk 45 minutes around the rim to Uhuru Peak. Photograph the sign. Descend. The descent takes most of the day — Barafu to Mweka is twelve hours of cumulative walking. You will sleep like a stone.
