What this route is good for Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route that uses hut accommodation rather than tents. The huts are wooden A-frame dorms with mattresses, a shared dining building, and simple toilets. If sleeping in a tent at 4,700m is the deal-breaker for you, Marangu is the route that solves the problem. That is the main thing it has going for it. Beyond that, the route's reputation is overstated: it has the lowest summit success rate of any seven-day-or-shorter route (around 65% in the standard 6-day version), it uses the same path up and down (which means you see the same scenery twice), and it is one of the busiest trails on the mountain. ## Six day versus seven day The standard Marangu is 6 days. A 7-day option adds an extra night at Horombo Hut for acclimatisation, which lifts the success rate to around 80%. If you choose Marangu, take the 7-day version. The extra USD 200 buys you the chance of actually summiting. ## Honest comparison For most first-time climbers we suggest Lemosho instead. It is one day longer, scenically superior, less crowded, and has a measurably higher summit-success rate. The hut accommodation is the only good reason to choose Marangu — and even then, the camping experience on Lemosho is not as harsh as the marketing suggests. The mess tent has tables and chairs; the sleeping tents are large enough to sit up in; the porters set everything up before you arrive at camp. ## The trail itself Day one is in the lush forest of the eastern flank — orchids, colobus monkeys, large ferns. Day two climbs onto the moorland with the giant lobelia and senecio. Day three crosses the high alpine desert of the Saddle, between Mawenzi and Kibo, to the summit base. Day four is summit night. Day five descends all the way down to Horombo. Day six is the final descent to the gate. ## On the summit night Identical to other routes: midnight start, headlamps up the scree, Gilman's Point on the rim at dawn (the slightly closer crater rim point — most climbers continue 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak from there). The same cold, the same thin air, the same long descent. The Marangu approach climbs from the east, so the sunrise from Gilman's is over the Mawenzi peak — a different and arguably more dramatic image than the Stella Point sunrise on the southern routes.
- Hut accommodation throughout (no tents)
- Single up-and-down route (same path up and down)
- The original Kilimanjaro climbing route
- Six-day version is the standard; seven-day is recommended
