What this route is good for Rongai is the only route that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north. Two things follow from that. First, the northern side of the mountain is in the rain shadow of the southern flanks — it gets less rain throughout the year. Second, almost no one climbs from this side, so the route is the quietest of the standard options. The combination makes Rongai the route we recommend in the wet shoulder months (April, May, November) and for any climber who wants a quieter approach. The summit-success rate (around 70%) is decent but not the best on the mountain. ## The character of the route Rongai is drier than the other routes. The forest section on day one is shorter and lighter. The moorland is more open, the views are longer, and the trail is dustier rather than muddier. You may see elephant or buffalo on the lower slopes — the northern side of the mountain is less developed and the wildlife crosses freely from the surrounding country. The route also passes the Mawenzi Tarn — a small glacial lake at the foot of the secondary peak of Kilimanjaro — which is one of the more atmospheric campsites on the mountain. Most other routes do not get to see Mawenzi up close; Rongai climbers spend a night below it. ## The drive to the start The Rongai starting point at Nale Moru is on the Kenyan border, which means a four-hour drive from Moshi around the eastern flank of the mountain to reach it. This is built into day one of the itinerary but is worth knowing — the actual trekking on day one is short because most of the day is in the vehicle. The reverse is true at the end: you descend the southern Marangu route and transfer to Moshi from the southern gate. ## On summit night Identical pattern to other routes. Leave Kibo Hut around 11 p.m., walk under headlamps up the scree, reach Gilman's Point on the rim at dawn, continue 45 minutes around the rim to Uhuru Peak. The Rongai approach climbs from the north and sunrise is towards the south-east — the Mawenzi peak is silhouetted against the rising sun, one of the better summit-morning views on the mountain. ## Honest comparison Rongai is a good route. It is not the best route. For most climbers in the standard climbing seasons (January-March, June-October) we recommend Lemosho first, Machame second, Rongai third. In the wet shoulder months Rongai moves to first.
- Northern approach — driest side of the mountain
- The quietest standard route
- Best route in April-May and November
- Wildlife sightings on lower slopes (elephant, buffalo)
