What this route is good for The Northern Circuit is the longest standard route on Kilimanjaro and has the highest summit-success rate — around 95%, against the industry average of 65%. It is also the most scenic: it circumnavigates the summit cone, giving you views from the west, north, east, and south as you walk around the mountain over six days before the summit attempt. The extra days are not padding. They are deliberate acclimatisation time at 3,500–4,200m, which is the altitude at which the body produces the extra red blood cells you need for the summit. Each additional night at intermediate altitude measurably improves your chance of summiting. ## Who should consider it Climbers in their fifties or sixties; climbers without prior high-altitude experience who want the best probability; honeymooners who can spare the extra days; trekkers who care about the experience as much as the summit. The route is not significantly harder than Lemosho on any given day — there is just more of it. ## Who probably should not Climbers on tight schedules. Climbers with prior altitude experience for whom the extra cost does not buy meaningful probability. Climbers for whom budget is the deciding factor. ## The character of the trail The first three days are identical to Lemosho — forest, then the Shira Plateau. Day four begins the northern leg, contouring around the western flank of the summit cone. Day five is the high north — almost nobody else is up here. Day six descends slightly and climbs to the eastern summit base. Day seven is summit night. The eastern approach to the summit (via School Hut and Gilman's Point) is different from the standard southern approach via Stella Point. The trail is slightly longer, slightly less steep at the top, and gives a different sunrise — Mawenzi peak silhouetted against the rising sun. ## On the crew A nine-day trip needs a larger crew (more food, more days of supplies). Plan for around four porters per climber rather than the standard three. We use the same KPAP-compliant pay rates throughout.
